are blocking snow plows rushing to clear the roads ahead of the work week. nbc's ron mot is there for us in boston. we begin with nbc's michelle franzen, who's live at laguardia airport. let's get to the travel problems with you, michelle. are they improving? >> reporter: they are improving, alex. this is probably one of the best days since the storm blew in here and buried areas of snow. we're at laguardia. people filing through here most of the day. a handful of cancellations here at the airport. overall, just fewer than 600 airports around the country. that is a far cry from the last few days. air travel as well as road travel frozen in time. the monster storm blizzard literally stopped vehicles in their tracks. >> snow all over the place. >> reporter: along the long island expressway and ramps, frustration and a trail of scattered vehicles. some remain abandoned in drifts. >> how do i get out of this mess? >> reporter: dozens of drivers had to be rescued after spending part or all night in bone-chilling temperatures. in connecticut and rhode island, phones are finally open this morni

are calling on the president to join us in replacing his sequester with better, more responsible spending cuts. >> joining me now, correspondent for the garden, anna marie cox and white house reporter for "the washington post", david kna knackmara. what's going to happen? >> there was a lot of concern about taxes going up. you saw everything go down to the wire. we tipped over the fiscal cliff for a day but then they came to an agreement. this time, this is a big -- sequester is a big issue and could result in a lot of job losses and a lot of damage to the economy. but because it's slower moving, there seems to be less impetus to get a deal done before the march 1st deadline. you're hearing maybe this would all be wrapped up and the continuing spending resolution, if that's not solved by the end of march could result in a government shutdown. there seems to be posturing for negotiating all at once, some time in march. looks like it's possible we'll go past the sequester. >> didn't the gop agree to the sequester deal? and if the gop wanted to stop it, they could have. how do you assess blaming

used snomobiles to get to some of those stranded. more than half a million customers still without power across the region with the numbers getting better in the past few hours. most of them are in massachusetts with more than 400,000 outages. rhode island has nearly 173,000 without power. connecticut more than 38,000 outages. other states fared a little bit better. >>> even though new york area airports began receiving flights today, the ripple effects across this country, airlines cancelling more than 5300 flights this week. and reporter jonathan hall from our nbc affiliate whdh was on the coast in massachusetts as the high tide came in. >> reporter: the water has definitely come up. i'd say a good three or four inches just in the last ten minutes or so. and the national guard is here on the scene helping people evacuate. no mandatory evacuations at hall, but they are strongly urged. people in low-lying areas, areas that normally flood, are told get out. and now it might be too late. we've definitely got the high tide flowing in here at hall. >> we're going to check in with repor
